, ; 1 DIXIE DORA BY SMALL MARGIN Just Lasts to Beat Trickys Son by a Head in Long Branch Event. Latter Gives Good Performance, Just Failing to Get Up Red Pirate at Prohibitive Odds. TORONTO, Ont, Oct. 8. Acclaiming race for better class platera brought together the best field for the second days sport at Long Branch. This was the mile and seventy yards of the fifth race and the contest resulted in a thrilling finish when Dixie Dora, in the silks of J. A. Chantler, registered a head verdict over W. C. Hannas Trickys Son, while but a neck away Easter Hatter took third in the field of nine. The victory of Dixie Dora was, her second in as many starts. A camera finish was called for but the apparatus failed to operate and the placing of the judges was used. There was, however, no question of the proper placing. Easter Hatter, Spearman and Black Falcon raced heads apart in the lead as the field swung into the back stretch and the trio maintained this order until reaching the far turn. Here Easter Hatter drew clear and Dixie Dora moved to reach closer contention. Swinging around the leaders the eventual winner reached second place where she was again taken in hand until straight in the stretch. Here she was put to pressure and responding gamely gradually wore Easter Hatter down to take command in the final few yards. Meanwhile a new threat loomed in Trickys Son, which had secured racing room on the inside entering the stretch. The Hanna representative finished with a rush, dislodged Easter Hatter in the final few strides and would have caught the winner in a few more yards. Red Pirate, making the second start of his career and the first start for his new owner, the Parkwood Stable, was returned the easiest, kind of winner in the six furlongs fourth race, in which nine Canadian-foaled juveniles met under allowances. In winning .the son of Marine duplicated his former success and was heavily supported to return only .45, the shortest mutuel price recorded in Ontario this season. Red Pirate was fastest away from the barrier but once in stride he was taken under stout restraint, permitting Cuvanna to take a short lead on the back stretch. This was under suffrance, however, for on the turn he was given his head and he surged to the front with ease, drawing clear at the will of his rider. Cuvanna wilted when headed and Fore Isus drove into second place. Her efforts to catch the winner were futile but she had no difficulty in saving the place award from Dark Robina.
