WOLVERINE HANDICAP Field of Fifteen Expected to Start in Detroits ,000 Feature. Whopper Top Weight With Crusher of 130 Pounds To Meet Formidable Opponents. DETROIT, Mich., June 17. The arrival of the Millsdale Stables Infantry and Blue Ridge Stables Cardarrone from Chicago this morning and a slow mile trial by Bomar Stables Siam practically assures a field of fifteen for Saturdays renewal of the ,000 added Wolverine Handicap. Both stars were accompanied by several stablemates, chief of which were, two-year-olds which will remain here to fill their engagements in the Moslem Temple Stakes. In all probability Infantry and Cardarrone will remain at Detroit, for both are eligible for the 0,000 added Frontier Handicap, the piece de resistance of the spring season and the feature for Saturday, June 26. Siam accomplished his task in easy fashion and over a track deep in mud. He was timed the mile in 1:55, after covering! the quarter in :28, half mile in :56, and the three-quarters in 1:25. TWO THREE-YEAR-OLDS. The addition of the Bomar colt to the probable field will mean that two three-year-olds will be tested against more seasoned performers. Carl S., hope of Mrs. James Chesney, had his final preparation yesterday morning. Although a heavy rain fell early this morning and showers during the training period would, at most tracks, presage adverse footing for the half holiday card, the local racing strip dries out so rapidly that in the event of no more rain, it might be in a good condition for the opening of tomorrows program. Since his victory in the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap, Whopper, which carried 126 pounds in that triumph, has been training in fine style and, although he will pick up the crushing impost of 130 pounds Saturday, he has demonstrated oh several Continued on thirty-eighth page. WOLVERINE HANDICAP occasions that he is an excellent weight carrier. WHOPPERS OPPONENTS. Those expected to oppose the Hal Price Headley star are Fred M. Alger, Jr.s, Azu-car, Infantry, Mrs. E. Denemarks Corinto, and War Emblem, Cardarrone, Tempestuous, Sir Jim James, Gyral, First Entry, Exhibit, Polar Flight, Professor Paul, Carl S., Stocks and Siam. That would mean a field of seventeen, but Frank Gilpin might decide to send only one of the Denemark color-bearers post-ward and Professor Paul might relinquish the task in favor of Carl S., his younger stablemate. In addition to the feature, racing secretary Webb Everett has programmed two allowance races and two events for top-notch platers. The program will be brought to a close with a race over a mile and three-sixteenths.
