STAKE VICTORY FOR WHITNEY . Piccolo Scores in Bunker Hill Handicap at Suffolk Downs by Brilliant Stretch Rush. BOSTON, Mass., June 17. The eton blue and brown of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney were carried to their first major triumph of the New England season, as Piccolo, under a good ride from "Babe" Hanford, drove to a nose victory in the ,000 Bunker Hill Handicap, mile and an eighth feature of the Bunker Hill Day sport at Suffolk Downs this afternoon. The winner made a gallant rush in the final seventy yards to defeat Mrs. C. E. Allens pacemaking Trouper by the narrowest of margins. Mrs. E. I. Wades Up and Up moving up into select circles today, turned in a game race to finish third. The stretch running Tugboat Frank was fourth. Blackbirder, rated one of the outstanding handicap horses in this section and a warm choice, beat only one horse in the event. He finished fifth, with only Cascapedia in his wake. He appeared to be anchored under his top impost of 125 pounds, and perhaps, has had too much of it lately. ! Trouper, burdened with only 95 pounds, fairly flew out of the gate and showed well in front as they went around the turn, j Up and Up was closest to him as they made the turn and went down the back-! I stretch, and Piccolo was being rated in ! third place, running easily. Up and Up moved up to the leader on the far turn, but Trouper was running in great form and 1 drew away again on the turn. He came ! into the stretch showing two lengths in front. Up and Up stayed in second .place right up to the sixteenth post, but before they came to that ground, Piccolos charge had begun and as they were set down for ; the final drive it was evident that the 1 horse from the Whitney barn was the one to beat. ! Hanford rode with all the power at his command and lifted his mount over the line j just a nose in front. ! Pleasant weather brought some 30,000 fans i to the course despite the competition of a ! double-header ball game in Boston. j
