NEGOTIATES MUDDY FOOTING Eponine Displays Mud Running Ability Over Soft Latonia Track. Workout Part of Keene Fillys Preparation for Saturdays Renewal of Historic Clipsetta Stakes. LATONIA, Ky., June 17. J. O. Keenes Eponine, probable favorite for the fifty-fifth running of the ,500 added Clipsetta Stakes at Latonia on Saturday, engaged in her final severe work for the contest after the completion of Wednesdays program here and performed in a highly impressive manner, despite adverse weather and track conditions. The fleet daughter of Jean Valjean Inquiry negotiated five furlongs in 1:03, handily, over a track that had been transformed into a sea of mud by the heavy rains that broke through the low hanging clouds a short time before the trial was made, according to the time recorded by private dockers. The filly, winner of the only start of her ! career, negotiated the sloppy footing in a ! manner that indicated her chances of winning the historic event would not be hampered in the event a soft track prevails Saturday. She stepped along the first half mile in :48 and this despite the fact that she was heavily bandaged and the wrappings became ! soaked before the trial. Eponine, which is regarded as one of the best juvenile fillies in the Blue Grass region this year, began from the five furlongs post under jockey Porter Roberts and worked to the finish line as dusk was settling over the Latonia course. IMPRESSED BY MOVE. Astute turfmen who viewed the chestnut fillys trial in preparation for the race were i impressed by the move and look for the Keene colorbearer to be installed the betting choice over the splendid field that will match strides over five and a half furlongs in the renewal of the Clipsetta. I There are two other eligibles in the Keene stable, Fantine and Meadow Sweet, but it was decided this morning that the chief re-! liance of the Lexington breeder will be Epo-i nine. Three other eligibles of considerably lesser note engaged in trials over the sloppy track this morning when the "dogs" Were up. The I King Ranchs Chispa, a daughter of Chicaro Prides Ella, which has not yet been to the starting gate here, was sent out for a five-! eighths gallop by trainer Bill Crump. The I Texas-bred youngster was timed in 1:13 for i the five panels. Smith G. Baker, Sr.s Janice and Miss Su-, san E. Kelloggs Accordian engaged in trials of a shorter distance, the latter stepping j three furlongs in :39 in handy fashion, j leaving the impression that the Brown Bud j filly has been sharpened to edge for the im-I pending dash. However, trainer Otis Clelland was not certain that he would send Accordian after the prize. Three furlongs in :41, handily, was what the split-second timepiece indicated for Janices effort, which, like Ac-cordians, was accomplished around the "dogs." Very little remains to be done with the remainder of the juveniles that will make up the Clipsetta field, which is shaping up as one of the most representative as well as the largest of recent years. MRS. GEO. BAKER KILLED HOMEWOOD, 111., June 17. Mrs. George Baker. wife of the trainer of the stable of Mrs. S." Bomp, was killed when struck by an automobile while crossing Halsted Street Wednesday afternoon. She died instantly. Funeral, arrangements have not yet been completed.
