PRECIPITATION WINS I ASCOT GOLD CUP i 2 Special Cablegram. ASCOT, England, June 17. The Ascot Gold Cup, two and a half miles, was won here today by Lady Zia Wernhers Precipitation, a four-.year-old son of Hurry On Double Life. Sir Abe Baileys Cecil was second and Lord Stanleys Quashed, winner of last years renewal, was third. There were twelve starters and among the unplaced iiorses was William Woodwards Boswell, the only American-owned thoroughbred in the field. The winners time was 4:18, two and one-fifth seconds slower than the Gold Cup course record of 4:16, made by Golden Myth in 1922, but many seconds faster than the time made by recent winners of the event Lady Zia Wernher is the first woman to win the race since 1900, when Lerman, owned by Lily Langtry, the actress, scored. Precipitation was strongly supported in the betting, paying 2 to 1. He won by two lengths from Cecil, which finished four lengths in advance of Quashed, which last year took a close decision from Omaha. Cecil started at 4 to 1 and Quashed at 100 to 7. Quashed trailed the field at the mile and a quarter mark but finished strongly in the late stages. The race was witnessed by the king and queen and other royal personages.
