ROCKINGHAM PARK INAUGURAL Lawrence Handicap Two-Horse Race With Guy Fawkes First. Rain Falls Throughout Afternoon. With Varied Track Conditions Prevailing for First Day of Sport. SALEM, N. H., June 21. Changed track conditions caused the field for the six furlongs Lawrence Handicap for three-year-olds, which featured the opening day of sport at. Rockingham Park, to be riddled with scratches, but although only four horses started in the ,500 added event it was a thrilling contest from the time starter Bob Frend yelled "come on" until they raced past the judges. A. C. Norris Guy Fawkes won the race by a neck over Greentrees Chicolorado, with Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sun Capture a distant third. Araho Stables Jackie D. was the only other starter. He was last all the way. Just a few yards from the starting point the race resolved itself into a two-horse contest. Sun Capture began in front but was immediately overhauled by Guy Fawkes and Chicolorado, and that pair, running head and head, drew away from all rivals down the backstretch. Jimmy Lynch took Guy Fawkes to a lead of about half a length and did not attempt to increase it too much. His mount was conceding seven pounds to his persistent rival and Lynch evidently was afraid to make too much use of him early. The leading pair came around the turn with Guy Fawkes showing the way by a neck. They came to the stretch the same margin apart. About the eighth post, Lynch gave Guy Fawkes his head and Guy Fawkes bounded off to a length advantage, but Chicolorado was far from being a beaten horse. In the. final sixteenth he responded to hard urging from Hilton Dabson and was catching the leader fast at the end. However, that neck that had separated them most of the way was still Guy Fawkes neck at the pay line. The Norris racer was an odds-on choice after the default of Rough Time, which was given 133 pounds in the stake. He earned -,975. The track varied from good to muddy during the course of the first five races, while the remainder of the program was run in the slop. The time of 1:12 for Guy Fawkes was excellent considering the conditions. The day was dark and rain fell throughout the afternoon. However, a crowd that jammed the plant was on hand for the opening of New Hampshire racing.
