Here and There on the Turf Dawn Play Steps to Front. . -Seen e shif t er Again Disappoints. Strabo Is Still Improving. Aneroid Continues Good Record. Newest developments in the three-year-old situation are the elevation of Dawn Play to la position of ranking importance and the absence of a dependable colt, now that War Admiral and Reaping Reward have been forced to the sidelines. In her first start of the, season against the colts, Dawn Play scored an impressive victory in the American Derby, even though her margin was less than a length over Burning Star, a colt which had not previously impressed to any marked degree. As the large and good-looking daughter of Clock Tower and Gun Play, by Man o War, was accounting for Washington Parks contribution to the three-year-olds, Sceneshifter came through with another disappointing performance in finishing third to Strabo and Rudie in the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct As in the Shevlin Stakes the previous Saturday, the colt, which was second to War Admiral in the Belmont Stakes, was unable to run down the leader although the additional distance of the Dwyer was believed in his favor. Remaining true to its confidence in the outstanding western candidates for the American Derby, the crowd at Washington Park Saturday installed the Milky Way Farm entry of Case Ace and Mars Shield as favorite, and Eagle Pass as the second choice. Dawn Play was next in demand, although those who had seen her victorious performance in the Coaching Club American Oaks were of the opinion she should have been the favorite. Case Ace had won the Illinois Derby in his last outing and Mars Shield came up to the American Derby with successive triumphs in the Texas Derby and Kentucky Oaks to her credit, hence their popularity. Eagle Pass had been a fast-closing second to Reaping Reward in the Latonia Derby on the previous Saturday. None of the three could cope with Dawn Play as she responded perfectly to rating for seven furlongs, went to Grey Gold, and then Case Ace, in willing fashion and held Burning Star safe under hand riding towards the finish. Dawn Play has returned to New York, where there is a possibility she will be a starter in the Brooklyn Handicap on Saturday, although more than likely she will not he called upon to go out of her age division at this time. The King Ranch star was asr signed 102 pounds in the Brooklyn, but has incurred a three-pound penalty, She, is eligible to the Gazelle Stakes, to be run the same afternoon at Aqueduct, and her, opponents over the iXnile and one-sixteenth also would be three-year-old fillies;-but her impost would be 123 pounds. With ,000 an added money, the. Gazelle will be worth just HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. about that amount, and at the moment" the field doesnt shape up in an imposing manner. Next most important event for three-year-olds is the Classic, and Dawn Play-probably will be pointed for it, as trrainer Max Hirsch hopes to repeat the double he scored in Chicagos two most important races with Gusto in 1932. Strabos Dwyer triumph did not come as much of a surprise to the Aqueduct public, as he was beaten only a head by Scene-shifter for place honors in the Shevlin, while the latter was lapped on Rudie. Eddie Arcaro gave Rudie the same sort of ride that won the Shevlin, but the additional furlong took its toll, and the Reigh Count speedster weakened in the final sixteenth where Sam Ren-ick brought up with a rush the improving son of Pompey and Blood Royal, by The Finn, from Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins stable to gain a" nose triumph. Sceneshifter, although finishing fastest of all, was a length away. Sceneshifter met with slight trouble at the far turn, which may have influenced his effort. He does not care for roughing, as was shown in the Kentucky Derby and Flamingo Stakes. The son of Sickle still Is entitled to all but maiden allowances, so one of the important events may fall to his lot before the season is out. Called upon to shoulder 123 pounds in the Carter Handicap, Aneroid demonstrated some weight-carrying ability at least in winning that historic dash of seven furlongs. In the Suburban Handicap, the four-year-old son of The Porter and Outburst, by Messenger, led all the way out by himself, but, unable, rto .get to the front in the earjyf stages of the Carter, he was called upon to come from behind in the stretch, which he did in most courageous fashion. Although he incurs a three-pound penalty and must take up 122 pounds in the Brooklyn, Aneroid is assured of extensive support even though the field for Saturdays mile and a furlong race promises to be a tough one. Such an impost will mark an increase of a -dozen pounds over his Suburban weight. Practically all of his Carter opponents were regular sprinters, but Aneroids effort was that of a horse .aiming for a longer distance. With victories in the Harford, Baltimore Spring,. Carter and Suburban Handicap and an overnight race as well as a close third-in the Dixie, Aneroids record this year is very impressive to say the least.
