RIVER DOWNS OPENING NEAR Thoroughbreds Arriving Daily for Wednesdays Inaugural. Recent Rains Benefit Track Conditions-Racing Secretary Scheduled Seven Races Daily. CINCINNATI, Ohio, Oct. 10. With preliminary details well advanced and the thoroughbred colony increasing rapidly, River Downs is in readiness for its sixteen days of fall racing, commencing Wednesday, October 12. Several hundred horses are expected to arrive at the Cincinnati track from Fair-mount and Latonia over the week-end and by Tuesday every stall will be filled. Edward P. Strong, general manager, and Charles F. Henry, racing secretary, were arrivals today, Mr. Strong coming from his home at Cleveland and judge Henry from Detroit. Both were pleased to find everything in ship-shape and ready for the. opening. Secretary Henry found several nominations for the Columbus Day Handicap awaiting him. Entries for the race close Monday and as it is open to horses of all ages several juveniles are expected to match strides with the more seasoned performers over six furlongs. Although only seven races will be offered daily, secretary Henry has programmed two extra races to be used in the event of the original numbers failing to fill. TRACK AT BEST. Rains during the past week have greatly benefited the track and should there be a continuation of fair weather it will be at its best for the opening. Since the spring meeting Columbia Avenue has been opened to the city and manager Strong and his associates believe this will be of great help. The caliber of thoroughbreds now on the grounds and expected Wednesday vie with . other years. Long distance racing again will 1 be one of the features, the first marathon being carded for Saturday. It is a journey over one mile and six furlongs. Many riders who participated in the Latonia meeting are expected here and among them are C. Mojena, A. Fernandez, E. Rodriguez, J. W. Wilson, R. Dean, R. Hutton, J. Ryan, J. Burke, J. Mayer, B. Thornton, W. L. Johnson, W E. Snyder, T. Meloche and others. The apprentice riders registered with clerk of the scales William Kelly are W. Seaman, J. Molbert, P. Driscoll, G. C. Fisher, E. Henson, N. Spine, E. White, D. Grant and J. C. White
