Those changing ownership were Braving Danger, Cornwallis, Bit by Bit, Surprise Box, Outboard and Playing Dan. The costlier claim was Cornwallis who was obtained by A. H. Utterback for ,000. Condition books for the eleven days of the fall meeting at Narragansett Park were available to horsemen at Laurel, Saturday. Nine stakes will be run at the New England track headed by the 5,000 added New England Futurity. The Maryland Racing Commission revoked the license of jockey L. Turner who went afoul of rules during the Havre de Grace meeting. Jockey Robert Merritt joined the riding colony here coming from Jamaica, L. I. John Leonard, father of ex-jockey Wm. Leonard, who is serving as a valet at Laurel, was injured in an automobile accident in Baltimore and is a patient at Mercy Hospital. The injuries are not believed serious. Albert G. Weston, veteran racing official, who retired at the close of ten-day meeting at Timonium was a visitor Saturday. Trainer Tom Smith, who transferred Charles S. Howards Seabiscuit to Pimlico to train for the most important engagement of his racing career, the coming match race with Glen Riddle Farms War Admiral, had the "Biscuit" on "the Maryland Jockey Club course Saturday morning for limbering up exercise and to get the feel of the Pimlico cushion. The five-year-old son of Hard Tack was galloped once around the racing surface by his regular exercise boy and was just permitted a brisk blowout of three-sixteenths. H. N. Lape and Mrs. Lape, accompanied by W. A. Julian, United States treasurer, were on hand to root for Blanco Sweep in the third race Monday. Word reached here that steeplechase jockey Roger Payne was killed at York, Pa., Saturday when the jumper Steel Dust fell and trampled on his body. Jockey Robert Merritt left late Monday for New York to fill several riding engagements. He is due back here Thursday. It is expected that a division of the J. E. Widener stable, in charge of Peter Coyne, will be brought here from New York to finish out the balance of the meeting. Miss Judy Johnson is shipping the jumpers Persian Prince and The Hour to Rose Tree Hunt to fill engagements on Wednesday. Homer Rose, who had charge of the H. M. Stevens concessions at the recent meeting staged at Wheeling Downs, joined the staff at Laurel Monday. Tom Thorpe, racing official, who refer-eed the Washington Redskin-New York Giants football game in Washington Sunday, made a brief stop to visit local acquaint ances. Jockey Nick Wall, contract rider for the William Ziegler, Jr., stable, is due here Tuesday. Wall was preceded here by his agent, "Chick" Lang. Agent George Pass arrived from New York and will book the mounts of jockey Hilton Dabson. Additions to the schooling list after Saturdays racing were Waka, Sumac and Grey Gold.
