WILLIAMS TO NARRAGANSETT Brilliant Apprentice to Display His Wares Before New Englanders. Texas Youngsters Close to Top of American Jockeys at Present Suffered From Accidents. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 10 When Nar-ragansett Park opens its fall meeting, October 13, New England racing fans will be given their first close-up of the riding sensation of the year, Sammy Williams, Americas leading apprentice jockey. The blond Texan, who stands second only to Johnny Longden in the list of winning jockeys of 1938, will arrive here Monday to report to Ed McCuan, who has leased his contract from J. C. Ellis, owner of Dade Park, Ohio. He will remain at Gansett during the entire meet. Horsemen who have watched the meteoric rise of Williams are enthusiastic over his chances of leading the list of riders before the end of the year. He is now close behind i the veteran Longden and if he continues the form he displayed at the Latonia meeting he has a great chance of finishing on top. Williams won his maiden victory at Tropical Park, December 22, 1937, when he pushed Take Ons nose first under the wire. RIDING IMPRESSES. His riding so impressed George Phillips, trainer for Maemere Farms, that he tried to purchase the lads contract from Ellis. The contract was not for sale, but Phillips used Williams at every possible opportunity and the boy started his surge toward the top by riding several high-class Maemere ! horses to victory in handicap and allowance , races at Hialeah Park. Williams continued his good work at Hot Springs, where he was going great guns until sustaining a broken collar bone in a fall. Recovering from this injury, he resumed riding at Thistle Down, only to have the same collar bone broken again when his mount fell under him. Overcoming this in-j jury, he resumed riding without having apparently suffered any loss" of skill or courage. Williams can ride at ninety-five pounds. j Up to September 26 of this year he had rid- den 790 mounts, finished first 153 times, i placed 112 times and wound up in the third place slot 133 times.
