MELBOURNE CUP WINNER The worlds famous Melbourne Cup, run at the Flemington race course November 1, furnished the biggest surprise of the Australian season in the victory of the outsider Catalogue, which score at 25 to 1. Catalogue was the pacemaker for the greater part of the two mile race and had three lengths to spare .over the 9 to 1 shot Bourbon as they reached the judges stand. The outsider Ortellos Star, at 40 to 1, finished third two and a half lengths farther in the rear. The choice in the betting, the New Zealand invader, Royal Chief, one of the heavyweights, finished fifth, with last years winner, Trump, a distant trailer. It was Catalogues first victory over a distance of ground and few besides his close connections benefited by his success. He covered the distance in 3:26 1-2, the slowest time in some years.
