t BOWIE TURF NOTES o Jockey J. Howell and owner-trainer L. L. Chambers were suspended by the stewards at Bowie because of irregular running of the horse Grape Thief, winner of the final event here on Wednesday. Happy Code, which registered eight victories in the silks of W. J. Hirsch during the present 1938 racing season, died at Laurel Thursday morning following a long illness. J. V. Stewart will winter his horses and others of a public stable at his Romney Royal. Farm near Elkton, Maryland. R. V. Boyle made plans to ship his horses to Jamaica, L. I., at the close of the meeting to be turned out for the winter months. E. Samaha purchased the two-year-old filly Counora from J. V. Stewart and turned the plater over to R. F. Cook to train. Joe Stevens of the H. M. Stevens Company recovered from his illness and was present at his office on Thanksgiving Day. Omnibus, owned by J. E. Widener, which remained at Pimlico when other members of the stable were shipped to Miami by trainer P. Coyne, died of lockjaw at the Maryland Jockey Club grounds. William Irvine, who raced in New England during the recent season arrived here to witness some of the fall racing at Bowie. Jockey H. Dabson was struck in the eye in the first race on Thursday astride My Hattie and after having the optic treated, fulfilled his remaining engagements. Word was received here that the B. F. Whitaker horses that were shipped to Hia-leah Park from Pimlico arrived at the Miami Jockey Club grounds in good shape. John Yocum, traffic agent of the P. R. R. is on hand daily making arrangements for horse shipments to various winter racing grounds. Some of the well-known sportsmen that ha"e reserved box seats at Charlestown, W. Va., for the coming meeting are J. A. Man-fuso, K. N. Gilpin, Mrs. E. L. Bull, R. E. P. Hoover, Dr. R. A. Jones and Robert Wild-man. Geo. Alexandra of the Medway Stable stated that he would ship seven members of that establishment to Charles Town after the meeting here. -
