CALIFORNIA SIRE RECORDS Golden State Making Rapid Strides in Breeding Industry. Flying Ebony and Bon Homme Have Enviable Records for Producing Horses Able to Win. LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 25. Figures dont lie. A recent check on California-owned stallions show that during the past year, the get of seventy of these horses have been returned to the winners circle. Twenty-five of the remaining thirty-five on the list are young stallions, recently put in stud duty. They have not as yet gotten horses of racing age and, therefore, are Ineligible for such a winners list. This is a truly remarkable average. The get of these California stallions have won on all the major tracks of the nation, against all types of competition. Their record stands as positive proof of the tremendous advancement of the industry in the state of California a splendid monument to the endeavors of local breeders a bright promise for future years. The figures show that these California stallions have had a grand total of 653 winners during the 1938 racing season. Of these winners, 113 have been two-year-olds. These 653 horses have come down in front in 1,370 races this past year, and in so doing have won the staggering amount of 30,954. It must be remembered that certain horses on the list below have not been standing in California long enough to have homebreds of racing age. However, the potent qualities of their eastern-bred offspring speak well for what may be expected of their California-bred sons and daughters. LEADS THE LIST. In this group is Flying Ebony, former Kentucky Derby winner, owned by Charles E. Perkins of the Alisal Ranch. This horses first California crop is now yearlings, coming two. Flying Ebony heads the California list in point of number of winners and number of races won, and he also ranks fourth throughout the entire nation. He has had out forty-four winners this season, which have won 110 races. Next to him on the local list comes Bon Homme, owned by Charles Cooper of the Rancho San Luis Rey. This good California stallion, which has been holding court in this state for many years, has had thirty-four winners of sixty-six races. The complete list follows: Number of Number of Stallion.
