ENTRIES FOR STAKES INCREASE Saratoga Specials Attract a Larger List of Nominations Than in 1938. Albany Handicap Again Heads List of Fixtures in Number of Eligibles Flash Popular. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., April 5. Officials of the Saratoga Association are very pleased at the response to their stakes, which closed on March 15, and which will be i run during the coming meeting at the beautiful upstate race course. 1,756 entries were received, against a total of 1,615 for the same closing a year ago, as shown by the following summary: 1938 1939 Saratoga Handicap 44 48 Wilson weight-for-age Stakes. 41 52 Whitney Stakes 33 34 Merchants and Citizens Handicap. 42 51 Catskill Handicap 56 54 Champlain Handicap 43 45 Delaware Handicap 52 61 American Legion Handicap 63 58 Diana Handicap 37 Kenner Stakes 68 67 Saranac Handicap 80 92 Huron Handicap 66 63 Test Stakes 60 50 Seneca Stakes 48 52 Saratoga Special 26 30 Saratoga Sales 99 115 Albany Handicap 171 171 Adirondack Handicap 146 169 Flash Stakes 152 169 Sanford Stakes 164 170 Schuylerville Stakes 161 168 1,615 1,756 The list of nominators is headed by William Ziegler, Jr., with sixty-seven entries, followed by Milky Way Farm with sixty-three, Joseph E. Widener fifty-eight, Green-tree Stable fifty-seven, Calumet Farm fifty-;six, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt fifty-five, Belair Stud forty-eight, George D. Widener S and Wheatley Stable forty-seven each, E. R. I Bradley forty-five, Mrs. E. Graham Lewis forty-three, W. E. Boeing thirty-six, Brook-imeade Stable thirty-four, Willis Sharpe Kil-tmer thirty-four, Millsdale Stable thirty-three, W-L Ranch thirty-one, Glen Riddle Farms j twenty-nine, C. V. Whitney and B. F. Whit-aker twenty-seven each, Marshall Field, John Hay Whitney and Louis B. Mayer twenty-five each, W. H. La Boyteaux twenty-five, Mrs. W. Plunket Stewart and Manhasset Stable twenty-three each, A. G. C. Sage twenty-two, Hal Price Headley, twenty, etc. STARS ELIGIBLE. War Admiral, Kayak H., Bull Lea, El Chico, Ciencia, Volitant, Impound and scores of others, all of them outstanding stars on the American turf, are eligible for one or more of the- stake events named. Kayak IT, 1 imported from South America by Charles S. I Howard, won the 00,000 Santa Anita Han-1 dicap; Bull Lea, the Widener Challenge Cup 1 at Hialeah Park, while El Chico went through his two-year-old year undefeated. The Diana Handicap, for fillies and mares, at one mile and an eighth, will have its inaugural running during the 1939 Saratoga meeting. This stake drew 37 entries for its first closing, among them Handcuff, Jacola, Esposa, Parscout, Escalade, So Rare, War Regalia, Dinner Date and Miss Brief.
