Hffi ANGEL OF BAY MEADOWS Operates Kitchen at San Bruno Track and Watches Over Her Boys Callahan Memorial. I SAN BRUNO, Calif., April 5. "Ma" Ber-tozzi is known as the "Angel of Bay Meadows." She is a little, elderly woman who operates the boarding kitchen at the Bay Meadows track. "Ma" Is of Italian descent and has two strapping sons who help her with the kitchen. The race track boys all eat at "Ma" Bertozzis place when the Bay Meadows season is on and rave about her spaghetti. One of her regular customers until about a week ago was Jerry Callahan. Jerry came from the auld sod many years ago on a clipper ship. He liked the race track and got a job rubbing the great Kingston, wonder horse of yesteryear. Jerry traveled all over the land with Kingston. He would tell you that a horse like Kingston could tie Seabiscuit in knots. Jerry was 83. Liked to play casino with "Ma" Bertozzi. Liked to catch her napping and rake in the aces. PASSES AWAY. The old ticker ceased to function last week and Jerry slipped silently out of the picture. He left nothing but a lot of memories, but he left a friend in "Ma" Bertozzi. "Order a nice casket," said "Ma." "We want to "put old Jerry away in style." Expenses were forgotten. She was going to bury one of i her boys. The few dollars made no difference. A few weeks more hard work in the kitchen cooking up the spaghetti and she would have it back. Jerry had a nice funeral. .Many grooms, several owners and trainers, a couple of officials and "Ma" Bertozzi and her two sons were there. Jerry was put away in style. Some tears were shed. More than had been shed over Jerry since he left his old home in Ireland many, many years ago. Then they all turned away and left Jerry to his last long sleep. Jerry and his stories of Kingston will not be forgotten. "Ma" Bertozzi has ordered a nice little stone. On it will be carved a picture of Kingston. That wont cost "Ma" a great deal. Just, a few more hours hard work. But shucks, "Ma" feels that any of Jerrys friends would have done the same. "Ma" is like that. Little wonder that she is known as the "Angel of Bay Meadows." j j
