SEVENTY IN DOWNS HANDICAP Arabs Arrow, First Winner of Stake, Named for 1939 RaTce. Bull Lea, Count Morse, Tiger, Burning Star and Others Promise Strong Field This Year. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 5. Arabs Arrow, owned by Mrs. Louise J. Hickman of Louisville, won the first running of the Churchill Downs Handicap last year and, barring the unforeseen, will try to take the second running of the stake. It is to be offered as one of the features of Derby week at the local course. The five-year-old son of The Porter Medemora is one of seventy three-year-olds and older horses named. A ,500 added purse has been attached and it is highly probable that he will be among the actual starters. Arabs Arrow was a triple stakes winner last year, for, besides the Churchill Downs Handicap, he also accounted for the Louisville Handicap at the same track and the Latonia Handicap at the Covington course. In all, the locally-owned five-year-old, which next year is intended for the stud, won four races, finished second three times and was twice third, to earn a total of 0,930. BETTER FIELD. The Churchill Downs Handicap is expected to attract a more powerful field than last year, for among those nominated are such outstanding thoroughbreds as the Calumet Farms Bull Lea, recent winner of The Wide-ner, and Count Morse; J. Another of the Kentucky Derby nominees has been made eligible for this event, and several of them might be started here in their final public trials for the 0,000 special, which is down for decision two days later.
