FAIR GROUNDS DISTRIBUTION! 22,080 in Purses Won by Horsemen at Long Winter Meeting. Louisiana Jockey Club Buns 793 Baces During 38-39 Season "Butsey" Hernandez Leading Money-Winning Owner. During the long winter meeting, which included 111 days of racing, the Louisiana Jockey Club distributed 22,080 in purses to the horsemen at the Fair Grounds track. 793 races were run during the 1938-1939 season and the daily average distribution was ,703.42. The horses which raced under the colors of "Butsey" Hernandez won 8,269, to place the New Orleans horseman first on the list of money-winning . owners for the meeting. The race for second place was close, with R. A. Coward winning 1,510 and J. W. Brown garnering 1,115. Day Off, winner of the Louisiana Derby under the banner of the Greentree Stable of Mrs. Payne Whitney, won ,510 in his lone appearance at the New Orleans track, to finish the leader in the horse division. Wax-wing won six races atid ,650, to finish in the runner-up position. Apprentice J. E. Oros, son of trainer J. Oros of- Illinois, was the leading jockey. He was astride ninety-one winners, which was twenty-one more than his closest rival, J. 1 Bowen. The latter was the leading jockey until March 6, but on that day he suffered two broken shoulder bones while astride Lyngate, which fell during the running of the seventh race. Training honors went to "Butsey" Hernandez, who saddled twenty-nine winning horses, but he was hard pressed for the coveted position by Burley Parke, who sent twenty-eight winners to the post.
