I THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 ARIEL TOY By NORRIS ROYDEN Editors Note Since this article was written, Ariel Toy won his two starts in 1939, including the Arkansas Derby, at one and one-eighth miles, in- which he demonstrated his ability to go a distance. Ariel Toy may not threaten for the three-year-old championship, but if he goes through the season as he did last year the son of Ariel and Toyo, by Waygood, will give the leaders plenty of argument. The moderate-sized colt owned by Hugh W. Jackson, New York socialite, who now trains him, just wasnt quite good enough to attain top ranking among the juveniles, but in every one of his thirteen starts he proved himself a determined fighter. Just what position Ariel Toy will take among the three-year-olds during 1939 probably will depend on how far he can go with his weight up. Ariel so far has failed to get a top-stayer, although several of his get have been very handy horses over the middle distances and to make good in races like the Kentucky Derby Ariel Toy must prove himself an exception to his breeding. It is very possible that Ariel Toy may be hailed as the best son of his sire when his racing days are completed, although perhaps not the fastest. He was a willing performer all last year and his later races were as good, if not better, than the early ones, and he started off this spring just where he left off last fall. In his three-year-old debut, the Jackson colt was sent more than six and one-half furlongs for the first time, easily negotiating a mile and seventy yards within a second of the Hot Springs track record. Then came his outing in the Arkansas Derby, at a mile and one furlong, to give a truer line on his ability to go a distance. Ariel Toy is a development of winter racing, making his initial appearance at Hia-leah Park late in January of 1938, winning easily by four lengths over Our Mat and others. In two other starts there he was second, beaten a length each time, to Maeline in the Nursery Stakes and Hialeah Juvenile Championship Stakes. Maeline ran as" Hireling in the Nursery. In the Belmont Park Juvenile Stakes, Ariel Toy again was second to Maeline, but was beaten only three-fourths of a length in the five- furlongs dash. This superiority of the Maemere Farm colt was reduced to a half length in the Tremont Stakes over the same distance at Aqueduct. Ariel Toy didnt do quite so well in his Delaware Park invasion, losing to Hardy Jim by two and a half lengths in mud and running fourth back of Eight Thirty, Deil and Hants in the Christiana Stakes. Tackling Eight Thirty again in the Flash Stakes at Saratoga, Ariel Toy went smartly to the late stages, but although tiring, finished in third place, as the George D. Widener star won by three lengths with Maeline second. Johnstown was fourth in the five and a half furlongs dash. He appeared to have the Saratoga Sales Stakes, over the same route, at his mercy when reaching the final furlong, but Volitant closed too fast and nipped him in the last stride. Impound and Donita M. were among those behind him. The Jackson colt was able to stick it out in the Sanford Stakes, his first try at six furlongs, but he was disqualified when the stewards held him guilty of the fatal accident to Thingumabob, the victory being awarded to Birch Rod. Running steadily in the Grand Union Hotel Stakes, Ariel Toy wound up in fourth place, but only slightly more than two lengths back of No Competition; as Hash was second and Third Degree third. Then followed his best effort yet, earning his second honors in the Hopeful Stakes at six and one-half furlongs. El Chico was just too much for the brown colt, but he in turn was too tough for Johnstown, Easy Mon and other likely youngsters. In his only two-year-old start, he gained revenge on No Competition by defeating him easily in a sprint at Laurel. Ariel Toy is a finely-made colt, being true to the Ariel-Eternal-Sweep-Ben Brush type. If he has distance-running ability, it may be attributed to his dam Toyo, a daughter of the Tracery stallion Waygood and a half-sister to the dam of Inlander, winner of the Classic and Travers.
