SMUGGLING CASE SETTLED NEW YORK, N. Y., April 11. The federal governments most sensational smuggling probe and prosecution ended yesterday with the imposition of a five-year prison term and ,000 fine on Albert N. Chaperau and a three-month jail sentence and ,500 fine for Mrs. Elma Lauer, wife of a New York Supreme Court justice. Chaperau was the master mind of the smuggling racket which involved Jack Benny and George Burns, comedians, and Mrs. Lauer, and he drew the stiffest penalty of the quartet. Chaperau was sentenced by Federal Judge Hulbert shortly after Judge Vincent Leibell had disposed of Mrs. Lauers case. It was Judge Leibell who also passed sentence on Benny.
