VALDINAS MAMMOTH STRING Forty-Six Horses Comprise Stable to Be Campaigned at Lincoln Fields — To Occupy Private Stable. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 17.— Arrangements for the care of one of the countrys largest stables are being made at Lincoln Fields, the Illinois track having attracted from Kentucky the Texas-owned Valdina Farms establishment, currently embracing forty-six horses, for its meeting of twenty-seven days opening a week from Thursday. The Valdina stable, owned by Emerson F. Woodward, Houston oil man, will start the Chicago season strongly fortified to carry on in all divisions. Two of the better known older thoroughbreds in this stable are Eagle Pass, a candidate for several of the Lincoln Fields added money features, and the three-year-old Viscounty, which finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby. These two stars may fill stakes engagements at Hollywood Park in July. MANY YOUNGSTERS. At this time trainer J. J. Flanigan has no less than thirty-eight Valdina two-year-olds under his care and, while several of these may be disposed of before the stable leaves Churchill Downs, Woodwards hand for representation in races for youngsters at Lincoln Fields and other Chicago tracks will be one of the strongest in the history of local racing. A majority of the two-year-olds were bred and raised at Valdina Farm in Texas, the colts, nineteen in number, having arrived in Kentucky from the ranch only a few days ago. The Valdina colors are well known to patrons of the local track and they should play an even more prominent role during the 1939 season. Much of the stables riding will be handled by Nunzio Pariso, who rode with success as an apprentice on the Chicago circuit last year. His contract was acquired by the stable last fall. The Woodward horses will occupy a private stable at Lincoln Fields, where all but a few of them will be quartered under one roof. The others will be provided for elsewhere.
