SPEED AIR EXPANSION WASHINGTON, D. C, May 17.— Speeding the armys gigantic air expansion program, the war department today designated seven civilian flying schools for the training of 1,000 aviation mechanics selected from enlisted personnel in the air corps. The schools will serve as adjuncts of the regular enlisted air corps training centers maintained by the army at Chanute field, Rantoul, 111., and Lowry field at Denver. Army officials said that 1,000 enlisted men will be sent to the civilian schools from July 1 next to June 30, 1940, while Chanute and Lowry fields are being expanded. They will be trained to become crew chiefs. The schools selected were Curtis-Wright Technical Institute of Aeronautics, Glendale, Calif.; Aeronautical University, Inc., Chicago; Roosevelt Field, Inc., Mineola, L. I.; Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, Okla.; Casey Jones School of Aeronautics, Newark, N. J.; New. England Aircraft School, Boston, and Parks Air College, Inc., East St. Louis, 111.
