ATLANTIC FLYER MISSING STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 17.— With unfavorable weather reported from nearly the whole course of his trans-Atlantic route, fears were felt today for the safety of Carl Backman, Swedish aviator, long overdue on a hop from Newfoundland. No ships at sea and no land lookouts reported sighting the small single-motored monoplane in which the 34-year-old American-trained airman took off from a Newfoundland airport yesterday morning at 5:40 eastern daylight time.
