Crack Renewal of Steger in Prospect K: C. DODSON Checked in at Hawthorne with 14 horses owned by Mrs. Al Sabath. Three Dots to Head Week-End Feature Marsch Duo of Mighty Story And Preoccupy, as Well as Jack S. L, to Meet Rouse Ace HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 21. The 1947 renewal of the 0,000 Steger Handicap, at six and one-half furlongs, drew a list of 22 nominations for its running here Saturday. The Steger may well prove one of the highlights of the current Lincoln Fields-at-Hawthorne meeting, and several outstanding thoroughbreds are expected to answer the bugle for the week-end head-liner. Racing Secretary and Handicapper Lawrence C. Bogenschutz recently posted weights for the fixture, and J. Howard Rouses Three Dots drew the top burden of 124 pounds. Three Dots, who is expected momentarily from Churchill Downs with the large stable trained by William Crump, probably will make his Illinois seasonal debut in the Steger. Making his first appearance of the year in the Pensive Handicap at the Kentucky Derby course on May 10, Three Dots was a handy front-running victor while shouldering top weight of 120 pounds in that six and one-half furlongs test. John Marsch will have a useful pair for the Steger in Mighty Story and Preoccupy. The former has been assigned 123 pounds for the Saturday test, while the latter gets in- under 117 pounds. Mighty Story and Preoccupy were visitors to the winners circle at Churchill Downs and the Marsch pair were on the Sportsmans Park track this morning for trials. Mighty Story breezed an easy five furlongs over the muddy footing in 1:04, while Preoccupy was sent a full mile, traversing the eight furlongs through the "off" going in 1:49, handily. Impressive 1946 Record Mighty Story is a favorite with Chicago turf followers and his 1946 record was most impressive, the gray son of Mahmoud accounting for the Peabody Memorial, the Meadowland Handicap, and the Discovery Handicap. The Marsch star also finished third in the Classic and was a keen contender in the Jersey Handicap. Preoccupys top effort last season was a smart triumph in the Joliet Stakes, in which event he defeated Say Blue, Princess Pat Stakes winner, and Colonel OF, victor in the Lafayette Stakes, the Hyde Park Stakes, and George Wolf Memorial. Mrs. John S. Letelliers Jack S. L who won the six-furlong Crete Handicap on in- augural day at this historic plant, is to carry 122 pounds in the Steger. Jack S. L. , was narrowly beaten by Lucas B. Combs i homebred Dark Jungle in the Churchill Downs Handicap before his transfer to the , Cicero oval, and the pair probably will re-. sume its duel in the week-end feature. , Dark Jungle sped seven furlongs in the r Louisville stake in 1:25 to defeat a good field while shouldering 112 pounds, with . Jack S. L. handling 114 pounds. Dark r Jungles Steger impost is 119 pounds and I he will be ridden by Steve Brooks, who guided him in his Downs triumph. : Among other Steger eligibles rated pos-j sible starters are Walter W. Jones Bull Play, a very shifty performer on any kind j of a track who is to take up 110 pounds, and Joenace Stables improved Juke Box, assigned 117 pounds. Good News Stables Boyish Love, 105; Mrs.-Emil Denemarks Fireworks, 105, and Chesty, 109; D. C. Wil-helms useful Bubbling Easy, 114, and Shady Brook Farms Merrymarch, 108 pounds, also may be under silks in the Saturday stake. Tomorrows program at the Hawthorne plant will match less fashionable thoroughbreds and those entered are gifted with mud-running proclivities and capable of negotiating the present stiff footing prevailing at the Cicero track. Four-year-olds and upward will meet in the first and second events at six and one-half furlongs; two-year-olds clash in the five furlongs third, and three-year-olds are to go post-ward in the six furlongs fourth and fifth numbers. Four-year-olds and upward are scheduled to contest the sixth, seventh and eighth races, the former at six and one-half furlongs; the seventh at one mile and a sixteenth, and the "nightcap" one mile and one furlong.
