— - ■ -- ■ ■ - Only Four in Eastern Shore Stakes Gigolo Prohibitive Favorite at Havre Joppa Purse to Bring Out Preakness Hopefuls Today In Swap Out, Sun Bahram HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 3.— The Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association concludes its 21 -day spring racing season tomorrow with a program featured by the thirty-seventh running of the ,500 added Eastern Shore Stakes, The four and a half furlongs dash for juveniles attracted a rather disappointing field of only four youngsters, one of whom is Sal Morittis well-regarded Gigolo. Gigolo, a colt by Eight Thirty and Tierce, Who was purchased from J. S. Phipps for a reported price of 0,000, will rule a prohibitive choice, and his presence in the field is responsible for the lack of response. He will be opposed by the following colts: Palatine Stables Quiz Show, Mrs. S. Diaz Nickie C. and L. A. Hawkins Pro Tanto. While the Eastern Shore seems to lack its usual touch of class, the supporting attraction, the mile and 70 yards Joppa Purse, designed for three-year-olds, cannot be placed in the same category. Included in the field is King Ranchs Swap Out, who was third to Capot and Slam Bang in the Chesapeake Stakes. The remainder of the field includes Mrs. E. H. Ellison, Jr.s, Sun Bahram, John A. Manfusos Alluring, C. E. Turtles Double Brandy, R. Ormes Great Shuffle, and L. Ormes Roy O. Returning to the Eastern Shore, Gigolo will be striving for his third victory in four starts. In his lone Florida race, prior to being purchased by Moritti, Gigolo was second to Make Swing, the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes winner, who was unbeaten during a four-race Hialeah campaign. Equaled Havre Track Mark Gigolos campaign in this area was launched auspiciously with a record-equaling half mile of :46% over the Graw strip. He followed that with another clever score, this time at four and a half furlongs. He again turned in the first half mile in :463/5 and finished out in :53, flat. Jimmy Lynch, who has ridden the colt in both local victories, returns to the saddle tomorrow. The logical contention tomorrow, if there is to be such a thing, will have to come from Quiz Show, a son of Apache, who is conditioned by the successful Slim Pierce. Quiz Show failed to impress in his lone Florida appearance, but made amends in his only local outing with an easy victory in 5:52%. His time was two-fifths of a second faster than that credited to Gigolo, and was only four-fifths of a second slower than Saggys disputed track standard. He will have the saddle services of veteran Johnny Gilbert, who is regarded as one of the better two-year-old riders in the country. Nickie C. and Pro Tanto raced together last Saturday in a 0,000 to ,000 claiming event. Nickie C. was an impressive five-length winner in :532/5 for his second victory of the year. Pro Tanto, a maiden, was seventh, beaten about a dozen lengths. Eligibles for Pimlico Stakes The Joppa contains two Preakness eligibles in Swap Out and Sun Bahram, as well as an eligible for the Pimlico Oaks in the filly, Alluring. Double Brandy is reported to be training for Pimlicos Survivor Stakes, while Great Shuffle and Roy O. are without important engagements. Swap Out has been postward but twice this year. He raced six furlongs on opening day here and, after a fair effort on that occasion, turned in a splendid race while third in the Chesapeake. A repeat of that performance would make him hard to beat tomorrow. Sun Bahram was quite impressive while dropping a nose decision to The Pincher in the Chesapeake Trial, then disappointed in the Chesapeake. Should he run to his best form, Sun Bahram could offer Swap Out a keen battle. Double Brandy won impressively last Saturday while stepping six furlongs in 1:11% and will be making his first attempt of the year to get a distance of ground. However, he demonstrated as a juvenile that he is capable of that accomplishment. Alluring, too, was impressive in her last race, finishing but two and a half lengths behind Danherst and Raise You at the six furlongs distance. Behind her in that effort were such good ones as Noble Impulse, The Pincher and Green Baize.
