Sagittarius Five Lengths On Top in Havre Event Finds Sloppy Track to Liking; TamperoRunner-Up in Gunpowder HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., May 3.— Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Sagittarius, thrice beaten at meeting when well supported, partially made amends this afternoon when he scored a hollow five-length victory in the featured six-furlong Gunpowder Purse. Sagittarius, a three -year -old son of Teddys Comet, was cleverly conditioned by Oscar White and turned in the exceedingly fast sloppy track time of 1:11%. Despite his commanding advantage, the Jeffords colt was kept to strong pressure by Pete McLean, who was substituting for the ailing Aubrey Snellings. The winner was the second choice in the field of non-winners of two races and paid .60 to his backers in the crowd of about 6,000 fans. Giving futile chase to the winner during the late stages was Tamper o, who was purchased at private terms last night from the King Ranch and this afternoon sported the silks of G. T. Strother. Tampero was more than three lengths in advance of E. A. Stones Rare Mineral, who took a narrow decision from L. Cherys Lands End for the third award. Sagittarius was first to show at the outset, but he was wisely steadied when Miss Whippet assumed pace-setting duties. The Jeffords colt was never worse than second and forged to the front when McLean was ready. Once headed, Miss Whippet faded badly and beat only San Chu at the finish. Lands End, who was third in each of his three previous appearances in Maryland this spring, broke tardily under Benny Civitello and, while racing extremely wide thereafter, was unable to offer a challenge.
