Khaki Surges Up With Stretch Rush to Win North Hills Purse Extreme Outsider Defeats t Favored Galloping Gus by Two Lengths at Jamaica JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 3.— W. Goadby Loews Khaki, the extreme outsider of the field, surged up on the outside in the stretch to win the featured North Hills Purse at Jamaica today. Two lengths back of the son of Heliopolis came Gus-tave Rings Galloping Gus, the favorite, with Short Brook Farms Bannerday, another longshot, two lengths farther back. Greenever Farms Halcyonic was fourth at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. Warren Mehrtens rode Khaki patiently and the colt paid 3.50 after being clocked in 1:46% over a track that had been drenched by all-night rains. One of the smallest crowds of the season, 21,005, turned out in hazy weather to view the moderate program. Favorites fared poorly, none gracing the winners circle through the feature. Galloping Gus Takes Lead As the field rounded the clubhouse turn in the North Hills, Bannerday led on the rail, followed by Galloping Gus and Anthracite, with Bar Sinister, Harbourton, Jaialai, Khaki and Halcyonic following and spaced over almost a sixteenth of a mile. Half way down the far side, Galloping Gus took over the lead from Bannerday, while Anthracite stayed in third place, followed by Harbourton, with Khaki still next to last and more than 10 lengths out of it. Galloping Gus opened a wide lead rounding the far turn, but began to tire nearing the head of the stretch and Bannerday drove hard on the outside, while Anthracite dropped out of contention and Khaki moved up with a powerful rush that carried him to the leaders before they were straightened away for the run home. Khaki drew away steadily through the stretch under a strong hand ride, while Galloping Gus fought on gamely. Banner-day held on well, while Bar Sinister made a brief bid in the stretch, then tired and finished fifth.
