— — Master Bid Tops Speed Purse Field of Nine at Sportsmans Seeks Repeat Win at C/cero Track While Facing VanBerg Duo of Rose Bed, Play Again SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, HI., May 3. — Perne L. Grissoms Master Bid, a gelding who was obtained from the Brook-meade Stable in an ,000 transaction that involved three horses last yeai, makes his second start of the meeting in the Speed Purse here tomorrow afternoon. The fleet six-year-old is to shoulder 120 pounds for the five furlongs affray and judging by his recent effort, lauded as one of the best of the meeting, he undoubtedly will be among the choices. The general belief among close students of local form is that Master Bid outclasses the eight foes aligned against him. A son of Psychic Bid — Light Brocade, by The Porter, Master Bid was one of the leading campaigners during the long Detroit meeting of last season. Although on rare occasions he raced at middle distances, his forte was sprinting, at which he was quite successful. Trainer Marion Barton placed him on the sidelines after he completed his campaign last October and did not put him back in heavy training until a couple of months ago. When he flashed the Gris-som colors to a spectacular victory here on opening day, those who witnessed the effort were of the opinion that he would be difficult to beat in the future. With the weight received under the allowance conditions of the Speed, his work will be cut out, for among his opponents are Eldorado Farms Pad Lock, Marion H. VanBergs Rose Bed, and Play Again; J. Truett, Jr.s Keep Moving, Valley View Farms Little Bobbles and Born to Win, J. Emerys Galla Babe, and W, H. Bishops Richavoo. "*•** Manifold to Ride Master Bid Master Bid is to be ridden by the veteran reinsman, Hank Manifold, who has been showing good form at the meeting. The VanBerg pair of Rose Bed and Play Again loom as the most formidable contenders, with the former regarded as much the best of the pair, even though she was beaten when backed down to odds-on favoritism in a previous start over this track. On that afternoon she was beaten by Mae Agnes and Riot after showing good early speed. The six-year-old daughter of Halcyon — Hanovianne, by Jim Gaffney, captured her lone start of the Hot Springs meeting before coming here, and it may be that her last race was needed to give her the "feel" of the course. Play Agains most recent race can quite definitely be discarded. It was her first start of the year and after she showed a dash of early speed she tired badly as if in need of further racing. Born to Win was one of the easiest victors of the meeting on the second day when he stumbled badly at the start, was last going down the backstretch, and then took the lead with a quick burst, and drew away to score by six lengths. He was a useful sort against fairly good company during his Florida campaign and by using his last race as a barometer, there seems every reason to believe he is fond of this strip. Pad Lock, the erratic Calumet Farms cast-off, was warmly supported in the race won by Master Bid, but he was squeezed back badly going into the first turn and failed to recover his best stride. He was a winner during the Hialeah Park meeting and most definitely is a better horse than his poor race indicates.
