Irish Sun Accorded Edge for Honors In Featured Riley Purse at Churchill Chief Contention Likely to t Come From Porters Broom, Traveler in Sprint Event CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 3. — Due to the failure of an originally scheduled ,000 handicap to attract a sufficient number of formidable entrants, the Riley Purse, a six-furlong sprint designed for three-year-olds and upward, will headline tomorrows stakeless agenda at this historic Central Avenue course. Every day hereafter, until Derby Day, the local management will present a stake each afternoon, including this seasons renewals of the Kentucky Oaks, Bashford Manor Stakes, Clark Handicap and the 00,000 added famed "Run for the Roses." Although the Riley Purse will serve as the salient feature on the card, racing secretary and handicapper Lawrence C. Bogenschutz also has arranged several other interesting contests, including the unnamed six furlongs fifth race and the one mile and one-sixteenth seventh event. Under the allowance conditions of the Riley, Ray Ankenbauers Porters Broom, Robert W. Athas Syndicate, Henry Forrests Traveler, who will be coupled in the wagering with Cotton Joe, and the Brown Hotel Stables Tidy Sum will be asked to assume the equal top imposts of 120 pounds. However, none of the aforementioned will answer the bugle under the full burden as each has the services of apprentice and contract riders. Won Lafayette as Juvenile The role of favorite in the dash will, in all probability, fall to William Veenemans fleet Irish Sun. Comprising the remainder . of the fashionable field are such other stellar sprinters as Brown and Woods Lady Joan, O. F. Woodwords Sir Sprite, who will be coupled with Porters Broom, Mrs. Leo Wagners Nickey W., J. and J. Rogers Walkie Talkie, and Countess In, owned by the combined interests of Endovina and Alesia. Irish Sun, three-year-old son of Sun Again — Irish Polly, accounted for three victories during his juvenile tenure including a smashing victory in the Lafayette Stakes and in addition holds the track record for the approximate four furlongs distance of the Heardley course at Keeneland. Irish Sun returned to competition this winter during the Hialeah Park meeting and scored one victory in four trips postward. After his arrival in the Blue Grass, the I Veeneman charge made one start at the I Versailles Pike oval in which he finished third to the arrear of Clifford Mooers highly-regarded Kentucky Derby contender, Old Rockport, and Mrs. Emil Denemarks Provocative in the Alec B. Gordon Purse. Only three horses started in this six furlongs affair with Irish Sun only slightly more than four lengths behind the leaders. Chief contention to Irish Sun should come from Porters Broom and Traveler. The former remained in winter quarters at the Downs following the termination of the fall session here, but has been working cleverly as of late, appears to be in superb condition. Porters Broom, five-year-old gelded progeny of Cant Wait — Shake Down, was generally regarded as one of the top flight handicap performers to show in Kentucky and Michigan last year and registered 11 victories in 19 efforts. The Ankenbauer performer will be asked to carry 117 pounds and will have the saddle services of his regular pilot, Jimmie Duff. Henry Forrests Traveler raced consistently well during the winter season at Oaklawn Park and could easily be returned the victor should he choose to come forth with one of his best efforts. His stablemate, Cotton Joe, has also displayed flashes of brilliancy at times and his chances would be greatly enhanced should the track be in an "off" condition. The fifth dash brings together a capacity group of intermediate claiming campaigners including James Paddocks Bubble Gum, winner of three tests at the Keeneland course. Slated to contest the Paddock charge among others are Ralph W. Shaws Shaws Pride, and Mrs. A. M. Creechs Thunder Hoof.
