Eight Sprinters Named For Suffolk Downs Test Hartwick Sends Out Flag Drill, Second Son in Runyon Purse SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 3. — Eight well-regarded sprinters have been entered overnight for tomorrows feature, named the Damon Runyon Purse, styled for four-year-olds and upward at six furlongs. Clarence Hartwick holds a strong hand in a bid for top honors of the feature with his pair of Flag Drill and Second Son. The others expected to contest the ,000 prize money are J. H. Carrs Gray Star, V. Martinez Cadet Dan, Ray Metcalfs Gracie Son, Marlet Stables Play Tag, D. A. Rosenbaums Reborn and H. A. Kimballs Octorora. Flag Drill, fresh from his victory on opening day, when he outfinished Boo Boo Shoo to gain a nose decision in a middle-distance event, should be at home in tomorrows sprint, especially if the light rains of today continue. The son of Flint Shot has always been partial to an "off" strip and last year turned in a creditable performance to annex the Paul Revere Handicap. Should the Hartwick star need help, it certainly appears enhanced by the naming of Second Son as a stablemate. The latter, acquired via private sale at Havre de Grace recently, has a skein of four straight triumphs dating back to two victories last fall and a like number so far this spring. True, Second Son has been defeating claimers, but they are of the higher bracket and he is not overmatched in tomorrows event. Two invaders from Lincoln Downs, gray g tar and Octorora, displayed enough at the neighboring Rhode Island oval to gain much respect in the Runyon line-up. Gray Star turned back the best sprinters stabled at Lincoln in her last and Octorora has a record of two triumphs and one second in three starts this year. Reborn, a stakes winner in 1948, has yet to show signs of the form that enabled him to net 1,250 last year, but with the lone effort this year at Bowie serving as conditioner the Amphitheatre colt could get back in the winning column by a top performance against this field. The others in the midweek feature are making their seasonal debut and appear to have a tough assignment against this field. All raced at New England tracks last year and they will be remembered by the local fans as winners against formidable opponents.
