Award Dukes Gal Honors at Suffolk Streak of Dawn Scores by Neck, But Is Set Back to Second Place Due to Foul SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 3. — Dukes Gal, a sophomore daughter of Gallant Duke, who was installed a slight favorite in the Harvard Purse, featured six-furlong test for fillies at Suffolk Downs this afternoon, needed a disqualification to earn the major portion of the ,600 purse. Sandy -Strand Stables Streak of Dawn, under apprentice Joe Phillippi, won the event by a neck but was placed second for drifting out and bumping the miss from the stable of Darling and Sims. Two lengths back of the leading pair, H. G. Bedwells False Front took down the minor award. Steady morning rains which earlier had caused the cancellation of the first scheduled turf race in the history of Suffolk Downs, stopped soon after the running of the first race, but left the racing strip in a sloppy condition. Heavy clouds continued to hover over the area during the afternoon but the air was mild and topcoats were discarded by a majority of the 9,504 in attendance. Dot H. Also Successful The victory of Dukes Gal afforded the form players to cash in for the second time during an afternoon that found many long shots scoring. Murray Hill Farms Dot H, winner of the fourth race was the only choice to score prior to the feature. Dukes Gal returned .20 for the usual two -dollar wager and was timed in 1:14. The Harvard lost some of its lustre when Jerry McCarthys Stables Egretta was declared as a late scratch. The former stakes winner was scheduled to make her seasonal debut and has a host of friends among the local patrons. The start of the Harvard found False Front showing the most speed out of the chute at the end of the backstretch, but her lead was short lived as Eternal Great and Atom Ride moved through on the inside to show the way for the first quarter mile. Streak of Dawn and Dukes Gal were side by side and close up out in the better going as the far turn was reached. Phillippi called on his charge to move on the turn and by the same token, Jack Robertson roused Dukes Gal to enter the final straightaway on even terms. Dukes Gal managed to gain a neck advantage going past the furlong marker, but the High Strung filly was in a running mood, refusing to give up. Streak of Dawn edged back into command, but drifted gradually carrying Dukes Gal with her. As was expected, Dukes Gals rider lodged a complaint of foul as soon as he dismounted and the claim was sustained by the stewards causing the usual round of boos and applause.
