► 1 Derby Day Staff of 5,000 It takes about 5,000 people to staff the Churchill Downs course on Derby Day, or approximately half the number who saw the first running, won by Aristides. There are approximately 1,500 persons employed in the catering: department. There are 60 program sellers, 200 ticket sellers and takers, and the staff of ushers numbers about 250. About 1,000 members of the state militia are on duty, augmented by some 400 policemen from the City of Louisville and Jefferson County, the state police and the tracks own guards.
