Girl Teletype Operators Invade Downs Press Box CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., 1 May 6. — A tradition will be shattered here : tomorrow. One of mans last strongholds, the press box, will be invaded by women. Some 24 i Western Union girls will "man" some of , the teletype machines which have been in-; stalled in Press Box "C" to handle the copy of out-of-town turf writers. These ; girls will replace Morse code operators, who formerly handled all "copy." In pre-i vious years it was necessary for Western Union to bring in out-of-town help to man the wires. This year, all 46 operators will ! be local employes. There will be only 10 , Morse operators. Churchill Downs built an addition to the ; press section that will permit the girls on the same level, but in a different section. The men will still have their own working quarters.
