Luxury Tour to Churchill Downs First of its Kind The Kentucky Derby, top racing event of the year, has developed an unprecedented interest among West Coast fans since the war, so much so that on May 2 a special "luxury train," carrying some 150 tourists, left San Francisco for Churchill Downs to witness the event. This conducted tour represents the first attempt to organize a full scale, formal tour from the West Coast to the Derby. It is also the most luxurious Derby trip to date and it is the first time a Derby tour has been tied in with a general sightseeing schedule. During the 10-day jaunt, the tourists stopped over at the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans and the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. Another scheduled stopover was the spa at French Lick Springs in Indiana. Since housing always has been a problem in Louisville at Derby time, arrangements were made for the tour to arrive there in the morning. After watching the Derby from long-reserved box seats, the group will board the train again in the evening and proceed to French Lick Springs.
