1 Rippey Registers Second •Straight Toboggan Score Charges Down Belmont Straight Course Before Pipette, Up Beat I BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 6. — William Helis Rippey scored his second straight victory under 129 pounds in the Toboggan Handicap, inaugural feature at Belmont Park today. The big Pompey stallion charged down the straight course in a perfectly straight line, reaching the end of the six furlongs a length and a half before John Barry Ryans Pipette, who led Isidore Biebers Up Beat another three parts of a length, while Mose Rauzins Buzfuz finished well along the inside rail to be fourth, just a nose out of the money. A tepid favorite with the throng of 20,695 who turned out for the opening program in steamy hot weather, Rippey returned .40. The time of 1:09% was a fifth faster than Rippers time under the same weight in the same race last year. Eric Guerin rode the Helis speedster, who added 6,850 to his earnings. Rippey is making a specialty of inaugural victories this spring, having won the Paumonok at Jamaica on April 1, opening day erf the New York season. 1 The Friday opening cut the attendance somewhat, while many familiar faces were i missing from the paddock, being already in Kentucky. The additional seats on the grandstand were well patronized and the beautiful track was resplendent with flowers for the opening. Blue Border was first away as the field for the Toboggan left the gate far up the stretch, with Pinebloom, Rippey, Up Beat and Pipette also on their toes, while River-lane dwelt and Buzfuz was off very slowly. As the horses crossed the main track in their diagonal charge down the straightaway, Rippey was more than a length before Royal Governor, who was swerving, while Pinebloom was beginning to fade, along with Blue Border, and Pipette had moved into third place. Up Beat was racing well in the middle of the track, followed by King Rhymer, Tea -Maker, Buzfuz and Riverlane. Rippey continued to run straight down the far side and Guerin merely nursed him along as Pipette struggled vainly to cut his lead. Up Beat held on well for his share, but bore over to the inside, losing ground, while Buzfuz, who didnt really get going g until he had traveled a half mile, finished very fast at the end. Royal Governor was a staggering fifth, followed by Blue Border and Tea-Maker.
