Bruces Hopes Fulfilled The Kentucky Derby was founded with "high hopes." R. G. Bruce, editor of a Kentucky paper, wrote in 1875, "Today will ever be historic in the turf annals of Kentucky as the first derby day of what I hope to see a long series of turf festivities." His hopes have been amply fulfilled.
