Eighteen Eighteen Sophomore Sophomore Fillies Fillies in in Acorn; Acorn; Play Play Again Again Repeats Repeats at at Sportsmans Sportsmans Leads Throughout As Popular Choice Bubbling Easy Forces Pace To Fast VanBerg Filly, But Repeated Bids Fall Short SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 10. — Marion H. VanBergs Play Again, a filly who had displayed superlative speed in his previous outing over this track, brought relief to the form players when she accounted for the Al Morgan Purse here this afternoon. Gaining the lead shortly after the start and hugging the rail throughout, she prevailed by a couple of lengths over D. C. Wilhelms Bubbling Easy, while M. J. Sulas Non Ferro was a well-beaten third. The well-named daughter of Crap Shooter — Efeldee, by Leonardo II., broke a series of four consecutive losses for favorites on the card. After the choice, In-finotto, won the opener, Town Guy, a plater who pulled up sore; Little Fair, who was unable to gain her familiar lead; the uncertain Bentbrook and Miss Clara were those who disappointed. Play Again, backed into .20 for , however, brought much pleasure to the crowd of 9,257. It was an ideal spring afternoon for the local patrons, with the skies being clear and a wind that was not brisk enough to cause any discomfort blowing through the course. Penniless Late Scratch Penniless, who was reported in a lamed condition by his trainer, Frank Nugent, was a late declaration from the Al Morgan, leaving seven to contest the issue at five furlongs. The winners time, 1:02%, did not remotely approach her 1:01%, which she recorded in her previous start, but it was good enough to get the job done with authority. Tony Skoronski, eading rider of the meeting, had her well within herself as she crossed the winning post. At the start the erratic Pad Lock darted out and interfered with Richavoo, second choice in the sprint. The latter was further interfered with when the same horse went out at the first turn. This all but eliminated both horses. In the meantime, Play Again, who had been outbroken by Bubbling Easy, was hustled hard to get to the first turn along Continued on Page Three Eighteen Shifty Fillies Seek Acorn at Belmont Gaffery, Lithe, Green Baize and Nell K., Most Formidable Rivals Continued from Page One The daughter of Case Ace has been training steadily for her comeback* Nell K. won the Prioress Stakes at Jamaica early in April, beating a large field with authority. More recently, however, she failed to concede 13 pounds to Gay Mood and Jazz Baby in a dash at Jamaica, finishing a length and a half behind the latter, whom she meets at level weights tomorrow. Boomdeay is something of a problem child. She won the Autumn Day Stakes last year, beating Nell K. and Lady Dori-mar, but finished fourth in the Selima and Marguerite Stakes. After losing Eric Guerin at the start of the Jamaica race in which Gay Mood and Jazz Baby beat Nell K., she apparently wanted to stay in the stalls with the same rider here last Friday. While moving up from eighth place to third, she actually gained only three lengths in the final quarter, most of that being saved by skimming the inside rail. The Acorn will be the sixth offering and is preceded by the Okapi Classified Handicap at six furlongs on the main course. This dash has attracted a field of 14, including Salmagundi, Nassau, Tavistock, Safe Arrival, Top Pilot, Yankee Hill, Master Mind and Splash. It shapes up as an open scramble. Greentree Stables costly South American, Doubtless H., who failed to show a trace of his brilliant Argentine form here last year, is slated to make his 1949 debut in this test, and has been training steadily.
