Sportsmans Sprint Lures Field of Nine Karakorum Looms Favorite Over R. L Light, City Hall In Karl Eitel Purse Today SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 10. — Marion H. VanBergs Karakorum, a hefty, blazed-faced gelding who flashed bristling speed in his seasonal racing bow over this strip several days ago, finds himself placed in what appears an excellent spot to break through the winners circle in the Karl Eitel Purse here tomorrow afternoon. The well-bred son of Mahmoud — Singing Top, by Royal Minstrel, faces a field of eight selling platers that will run under allowance conditions in the seven-furlong test. Those slated to compete are M. White-books R. L. Light, Mrs. E. F. Rydlewskis City Hall, Ben Fogelsons Curler, J. De-Francescos Taters, J. W. Sniders Little Fawn, C. Mengs Fearless Ken and the entry of Top Sergeant and Black Cat, owned by D. A. Lipe and Kelley and OHeisner. Karakorum was claimed by VanBerg, who has earned a reputation as an outstanding halter specialist, last fall at this track when the big gelding was running with a ,000 tag. He was sent to Columbus, Neb., where he was idle during the winter, and last Friday he returned to competition at this track, fresh and fit. Tony Skoronski, who also is to pilot Karakorum tomorrow, hustled him right along and as they moved around the final turn he enjoyed a three-length lead. However, his lack of competition this season took its toll and Some Bid came again and beat him. However, some useful ,000 platers were in back of the VanBerg color-bearer, including Pictoresque, Legislator, One Atom, Herbie G., Taters and Florizan Ace. Frequent Winner in State Karakorum has been a frequent winner in this state for several seasons. He was bred by Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and originally was destined, it was believed, for stakes victories. However, when he showed signs of becoming a "bleeder," he was disposed of by the Whitney interests and later raced successfully for Mrs. Emil Denemark, well known Chicago breeder and sportswoman, Karakorum at times bled during the running of his races for Denemark, but invariably recovered quickly and rebounded with victories shortly thereafter. It was because of the class he had shown in the past that VanBerg claimed him for ,000. If he continues to show the form he displayed against Some Bid, he could prove a bargain and a very useful bread-winner for the successful VanBerg unit. R. L. Light looms as the main contender. Only yesterday the eight-year-old finished second in a seven-furlong race, won by Paper Clip, and those in back of him were Seamans Pal, Rippling Sand, Mannequin, Poppa George, Gee Teecee and Sun Tannery. Prior to that effort the son of Sweeping Light — Shady Gate, by Ballot, drove to an impressive victory against Fearless Ken, Donna L. and others. Another that should be close up throughout is City Hall, a speedy sort who seems to be on the improve and who is moving several notches up the class ladder. The six-year-old turned back a field of ,000 platers with what amounted to ridiculous ease in her last start, being five lengths in front and going nicely. Shouid any of the others break through these mentioned it would come in the nature of a surprise. Although racing secretary Horace Wade set up the Karl Eitel as the feature, the best race on the program, by a great margin, is the seventh, in which a band of ,000-$ 10,000 platers will compete at a mile and one-sixteenth. Superwolf, Scotland Yard and Kaslick will be among those favored in this affair.
