King Bay Prevails in Downs Sprint Jerry Wests Third Winner on Program Bax Stallion Turns Back Favored Tidy Sum by Neck Margin in Elwood Purse CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 10. — Bernard J. Baxs King Bay drove to a game, if surprising victory in the Elwood Purse, a sixth and featured attraction on the afternoons program. Cleverly ridden by apprentice Jerry West, who was completing a saddle triple for the day, King Bay went to the fore immediately after the start of the six-furlong dash, and, under steady rating had enough left at the end of the event to prevail over Brown Hotel Stables favored Tidy Sum by a neck. King Bay sprinted into a length advantage without undue delay after starter Rueben White dispatched the field, followed by the fleet Southern Pride and Tidy Sum. On the far turn apprentice Lois C. Cook, on the favorite, moved into closer contention while on the outside and as the field straightened in the home lane was only a length to the arrear of the ultimate victor. As the furlong marker was passed Southern Pride began to show decided signs of weariness and it became apparent that King Bay and Tidy Sum would wage a personal battle for the major honors. The former held on tenaciously to the end. Track Sea of Mud In contrast to the ideal conditions which prevailed in this sector throughout the first week of racing, todays card was conducted under rather inclement circumstances including a racing strip often referred to as a "sea of mud." A disappointing crowd of some 5,000 turned out for the afternoons activities. William H. Veenemans Pharme, promising daughter of Menow — Manspell, sped to a game victory over nine other two-year-olds in the five -furlong opener. With jockey C. J. Meyer in the saddle, the Veeneman juvenile went to the front immediately after the start and made every post a winning one as she reached the wire two and one-half lengths before Elite Studs Monolith, second by four lengths in advance of W. J. Waldens Double Dared. An outsider in the speculation, Pharme rewarded her scattered backers in excess of 17 to 1 and stepped the distance over the muddy track in 1:03%.
