Eight Listed as Preakness Probables Noble Impulse Has j Qualified for Race 4 Will Only Start if Track Is Fast; Invaders From Derby Scene Reach Pimlico Track PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 10.— The impressive victory of Crispin Oglebays Noble Impulse in Mondays Survivor Stakes, In which the Bull Dog three-year-old established a new mile and a sixteenth track standar of 1:42, may bring about surprising developments in the running of Saturdays rich Preakness. Noble Impulse, it was announced this morning by trainer J. P. "Doc" Jones, can now be regarded as a starter in the mile and three-sixteenths classic, but only if the racing surface is in fast condition. Should the Ogbay colt parade postward he will have only scattered backing, but it is safe to predict that Greentree Stables Capot, ruhner-up to Ponder in the Kentucky Derby, will lose many of his supporters through the presence of Noble Impulse. In the Kentucky classic, Capot was the only participant who made an effort to stay with Fred Hoopers highly fancied Olympia, and the Greentree colorbearer handled his chores flawlessly, racing Hoopers heavily supported entrant into defeat soon after negotiating the first mile. When it was intimated in Kentucky that Olympia would pass up the Preakness to be reserved for later engagements, possibly the Withers Mile, many keen observers felt that Capot would be left without serious opposition during the early stages of the Preakness. This seemed to be the case until Noble Impulse moved into prominence through his Survivor triumph. Frequent Stakes Winner Noble Impulse is no flash-in-the-pan, for he was a frequent stakes winner as a juvenile, earning nearly 0,000 through five victories in 18 starts. His stakes victories included the Christiana, Eastern Shore, Albany and James H. Connors Memorial. During his juvenile campaign he was tried at a distance of ground on two occasions and each time failed to show to advantage. Wintered in Virginia, Noble Impulse returned to competition at Havre de Grace, starting twice at sprint distances and showing signs of tiring on each occasion. However, since arriying at this track he evidently has improved greatly. He worked a mile in 1:38 % in his Survivor final and, in the race itself, was clocked in 1:35% for the first eight panels. While Noble Impulse will be a starter only if the track is fast, Christiana Stables Parliament will face the starter only in the event of an "off" track. This leaves the probable starting field at eight thoroughbreds. Likely Starters At this writing, the field for the 73rd running of the famed Maryland classic shapes up as follows — Greentree Stables Capot, Calumet Farms Ponder, Isidore Biebers Palestinian, Clifford Mooers Old Rockport, Mrs. E. H. Ellison, Jr.s, Sun Bahram, Mrs. Adal L. Rices Model Cadet, King Ranchs Curandero, and either Noble Impulse or Parliament, depending upon the track conditions. With the exception of Curandero, who has but a short trip from the Metropolitan area, all of the Preakness probabilities are quartered at this Maryland Jockey Club course. Palestinian and Old Rockport arrived on the scene Monday, while Ponder, Capot and Model Cadet checked in this morning from Churchill Downs. Noble Impulse, Sun Bahram and Parliament were already here when the week commenced, the last named having shipped from Belmont Park. Riding assignments for the Preakness are just about complete with the only notable change being on Palestinian, who will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro.
