Papa Redbird Heads String Of J. A. Goodwin at Detroit FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 10. — Joseph A. Goodwin, master of Lexington, Kentuckys famed Patchen Wilkes farm, is to be represented at the Fair Grounds this season by a powerful stable, which is being conditioned by John Zoeller, former manager of Alsab Farm. The top member of the Goodwin unit is Papa Redbird, who startled dockers and work-watchers there yesterday morning when he breezed six furlongs in l:16x/5. Papa Redbird, well-conformed four-year-old son of Balladier and Taj Bibi, won 6,300 during 1948, annexing major honors in the Arlington Classic and the Dick Welles Stakes. When capturing these two important racing fixtures, Papa Redbird turned back such company as Shy Guy, My Request, Loujac, Bewitch, Whirl Blast, and Beau Dandy, among others. Bird Whistle, Donkey Serenade, Chicken Hawk, Chariot Wheels, Lilly Perfume, Blue Tail Fly, Kattydidit, Scarlet Wing, Four L. Clover, Romanelli, Black Joey, Canary Bird, and Hot Chocolate are other Goodwin racers. Zoeller also is training Good Fortune, Royal Wedding, State Charter, Pagoda, Record Vote, and Record High for Col. Phil T. Chinn, noted Kentucky turfman, who maintains Old Hickory Farm.
