Retire Hachazo to Stud At Illinois1 Mikel Farm Argentine-Bred Son of Congreve Will Begin Duties This Spring SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 10. — The thoroughbred breeding industry j in Illinois was bolstered considerably by the retirement of Hachazo to stud as announced by J. D. Mikel here today. Hachazo will stand at Mikel Farm near Carlock, 111., which breeding establishment is maintained by Mikel and his son William A. The imported eight-year-old son of Congreve — Haiche, by Your Majesty, bred in Argentina, joins in stud at Mikel Farm, Hygoby and Hypocrite. Mikel has 15 mares for himself, and others for several Illinois breeders quartered at the 180-acre breeding farm located in the southern part of the state. Hachazo is a stakes winner in this country. In 1946, his first year of racing in the United States, Hachazo captured the Governor Bowie Handicap at Pimlico race track. He won this one and five-eighths miles event in the colors of Boone Hall Stable, owned by D. Djordjadze, who imported the bay son of Congreve to these shores. Hachazo won three races in eight starts in 1946. The following year he failed to earn brackets during a light campaign but finished second on three occasions. He was defeated by a head by Talon in the Sara- toga Cup at one mile and six furlongs after making the pace until the closing stride. In number of purses won, 1948 was Hachazo s most successful year. Last season he started 10 times and five of these resulted in victories. Mikel, who annually campaigns a string of horses on the Chicago circuit for his son and some for Norman Elrod, saddled Hachazo for each of these triumphs. William Mikel came into the possession of Hachazo early last season through the claiming receptacle. Hachazo made one start this year before it was decided to retire him to the stud. He raced on the grass course at Hialeah Park in January but went lame during the run- ning. Mikel stated today that the majority of the broodmare band at his farm will be bred this spring to Hachazo.
