A High Boss Set Back For Foul at Detroit Applejack Jake Awarded Top Honors as Needham Racer Ducks to Inside in Stretch PAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 16. — Splendid overhead conditions and a fast track again greeted patrons at the "Woodward Avenue plant today, a crowd of some 8,500 turf fans turning out for the sport, which was interesting throughout the entire matinee. Wagering moved along briskly and the Michigan Racing Association officials expressed themselves as quite well satisfied with the "off" day attendance and tote figures. The first disqualification of the Motor City meeting came about in the six-furlong fourth race today when R. Needhams High Boss, ridden by Kenneth Church, was set back to fourth for fouling during the stretch run. High Boss ducked to the inside near the three-sixteenths pole and forced Jimmie, who races under the silks of Mrs. Roy Carruthers, "to take up. High Boss, then drew clear but his number was taken down by the stewards. * From the press stand it appeared that - High Boss shied from the crowd and it was obvious that Jockey Church was taken by complete surprise when his mount suddenly swerved in front of Jimmie. Two Lengths Off Top Horse W. C. Hardies Applejack Jake, two lengths off High Boss at the end of the sprint, wound up in the winners slot while Kidd Stables Carpet Sweep received second money and Jimmie, the minor portion of the purse. Applejack Jake was ridden by Joe Jacobs and stepped the three-quarter mile in 1:13%. Keystone Stables Dover Road, well handled by apprentice Don Holstein, drove to a length and one-half decision in the six furlongs opener which matched 11 ordinary platers. Dover Road worked her way forward steadily to the stretch and after wearing down His Grace held Mrs. Raymond Grundys Western Front safe. H. Dickmans Waterclock finished third. Kidd Stables favored Mio Lips was never a serious factor in the sprint.
