Arise Furnishes Stromboli Surprise Danherst Beaten Neck at Belmont Ocean Drive, Reveille Finish Third, Fourth, Respectively, In Their Preps for Withers BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., May 16. — The Stromboli Handicap for three-year-olds resulted in a stirring finish in which Arise, racing for the Toronto-owned Addison Stable, and the extreme outsider in the field of six, downed William Helis Danherst in the final strides. A length and a half back of these two was Ocean Drive, racing for Fred w". Hooper, while Reveille, Algasir and Marabout rounded out the field. In the starting list were two hopefuls for the week-end fixture, the Withers, namely, Reveille and Ocean Drive. This event, at six furlongs, attracted the bulk of attention of the 23,648 patrons who journeyed to Belmont Park for the. afternoon. Arise triumphed by a neck under the handling of Warren Mehrtens and the score completed a double for the Jamaica youth, who shared the riding honors with the veteran Eddie Arcaro, who also had a brace of winners to his credit. Arise circled his field at the stretch turn and sped the distance in 1:11%, The sextet for the Stromboli left the stalls in fairly good alignment, although Reveille left in somewhat of a tangle for Ovie Scurlock was taking up when the stall gates were released. His start was reminiscent of his Flamingo break which brought about his defeat by Olympia and Sneak. Cut Out Swift Pace Ocean Drive and Algasir-were the fleetest of foot and these two cut out a swift pace as they raced along lapped two lengths" in front of Arise, Danherst and Marabout, while some five lengths back was Reveille. At the stretch turn, Algasir and Ocean Drive held command, but their margin had been narrowed to a matter of feet as Arise moved up on the outside and Danherst drove up inside of him. The early pace took its toll at the stretch turn and Marabout was the first to give way. He dropped back fast. When well straightened out for the run to the finish wire, there was little to choose between the quartet as they raced spread across the track. In the final sixteenth, Algasir and Ocean Drive shortened their strides and dropped back, while Danherst and Arise, under severe urging began to draw away. Through the final 70 yards, the son of He Did and Corallie B. proved the best as he surged home by a neck margin. Ocean Drive, although tiring fast, held four lengths to the good of Reveille, who made up ground over tired horses.
