Bullish Heads Gibbons Purse Field Denemark Sprinter4 Meets Eight Rivals Won Last Outing by Seven J Lengths; Rose Bed Seen Top 2 Contender in Lincoln Race j WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., , May 16. — Mrs. Emil Denemark, well known turf patron whose large and fashionable stable, trained by Bob McGarvey, bids fair to enjoy one of its most successful seasons on Illinois soil, appears to hold a powerful ] hand in the Gibbons Purse, three-quarters i of a mile feature that headlines tomorrows excellent offering as the Lincoln Fields j Racing Association settles down into stride after todays promising opening of the 30- : day session. : The Denemark unit is to be represented , by the steady campaigner, Bullish, a geld- j ing who has been a favorite in local racing , circles since he first appeared under colors ] in 1946. Mrs. Denemark obtained the five- : year-old son of Bull Lea — Dismay, by Dis- covery, from the Keeneland Sales of 45 for ; ,600 and the big gelding has proven him- ] selm a rare bargain since. He isnt what might be termed a top flight sprinter, but i annually he brings home more than enough earnings to pay a large portion of feed bills run up by weaker members of the organization. Last season, for example, he gleaned a total of 5,180 and already has a head-on start this season, with a victory and, a pair of seconds in six starts. Those facing him in the dash are Eldorado Farms Pad Lock, Mrs. J. L. Ches- neys Play Hands, O. J. Breaults Brolite, T. J. Graces Tri Step, D. A. Ewarts Easy Dough, Marion H. VanBergs* Rose Red, Plymouth Stables Storm King, and En-dovina and Alesias Countess In. Started Season at Oaklawn Bullish, like all the other Denemark .horses, came here well seasoned. They began their 49 campaign at Oaklawn Park, located at Hot Springs, Ark., and from the Spa course they were sent to Keeneland and later to Churchill Downs. It was at the latter course that Bullish found his best racing stride, scoring by seven open lengths over a good field of sprinters in his most recent start on April 21. Trainer McGarvey is in a position to choose his spots in the sprinting division, for not only does he have Bullish, but the fast three-year-old Provocative as well. Either is capable of making the best save Coaltown and a few others step before admitting defeat. The VanBerg Stable, which usually switches its activity to Detroit upon completion of the Sportsmans Park meeting, is to be represented by the consistent sprinter, Rose Bed. The six-year-old mare didnt show to her best advantage at Sportsmans Park, where twice she was a beaten favorite. • Her record shows that she reaches her peak on a track .of a mile or more in circumference and under her reasonable impost of 113 pounds she should be hard to beat. Tony Skoronski, leading rider at Sportsmans, is to be in the saddle irons. As a matter of fact, he has given first call to the VanBerg stable for the entire meeting. Last year Rose Bed captured five of her 16 starts and was in the money on five other occasions, amassing a total of 3,525 in purses. After showing a trio of dull efforts at Oaklawn Park, Countess In, in her only - start at Churchill Downs, showed she is back in trim condition and has all her speed by finishing third to King Bay and Tidy Sum last week. In back of her were Best Prospect, Your Reward, Southern Pride, and Merrymarch, all of whom would get a figure were they entered in the Gibbons. Gene Pederson, a lad who has been plying his trade on the West Coast for several years, will be astride the Count Gallahad — Reigh Helen four-year-old.
