Seven Middle Distance Runners Vief Sgt. Abe Seeking Repeat at Downs Morris Colorbearer Faces ] Reighs Comet, Watch Andy i In Cavalcade Purse Today • CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky„ ! May 16.— Seven veteran middle distance * performers were named to contest the mile ■ and one-sixteenth Cavalcade Purse which ] will feature tomorrows rather attractive program at this historical Central Avenue ! course. The remainder of the eight-race : agenda is devoted to three-year-old maiden * fillies, who will parade postward in the • six-furlong Startle Purse and members of . the claiming category who will be seen in action on the balance of the card. ; E. R. Morris consistent Sgt. Abe heads -the group for the afternoons feature, ; which should prove interesting from a ! wagering standpoint. Chief opposition to the Morris colorbearer should come from Mrs. H. J. Damms Reighs Comet and Leo J. Caillouettes favorite, Watch Andy. Mrs. Kitty Niles Boat Man, Nate L. Raffelmans Pomps Gal, M. A. Waldheims Fifteenth and Lester Manor Stables Manor Lad comprise the remainder of the formidable field. Sgt. Abe, installed as the even money choice in the initial race on Derby Day, raced to expectations while stepping to an impressive victory over such well regarded charges as Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Bowles McCosh and the Meadowbrook Stables Gus G. Since that engagement Sgt. Abe has been training. smartly and appears to have retained his winning form. Reighs Comet proved victorious in his first outing during the Keenelarid meeting, but since his arrival here has been pitted against stern competition and has been unable to register his second victory of the season. Stepping Up in Class Watch Andy drove to a game triumph over a group of intermediate platers during the first week of the current meeting but •appears to have been stepped up considerably in better class than against whom his success w,as recorded. Boat Man wintered at the local track and has made only one start since the termination of the fall Downs session in his only effort this year. He placed second to the arrear of the aforementioned Gus G. in a mile and one-sixteenth event and he should benefit greatly from that engagement. Pomps Gal, Manor Lad and Fifteenth have performed creditably at times, but would have to display decided improvement to gain the major honors. Calumet Farms Whirl-A-Bit, Augustus and Nahms Scapagal and W. N. McKinneys Classy Scholar, top the list of entrants for the Startle Purse. The Calumet performer has paraded postward twice during her competitive career, once at Keeneland and the other time at the local oval. In her inaugural appearance at the Versailles Pike track the daughter of Whirlaway raced greenly and finished unplaced in this years edition of the Runnymede Purse. In her last start Whirl-A-Bit closed with a belated rush to place third behind Preceder and Missab in the Lord Murphy Purse. Scapagal has shown to advantage in her morning triials since her last effort and should provide the most competition to the Calumet miss. Rounding out the field are such other well bred sophomore members of the so-called "weaker sex" as Thomas Hills Fana G., Eslie Asburys Dearlea, Walter Fugates Engels Millie and R. B. Allens Perfidy.
