Should the race take place, it would be at the mile and three-sixteenths distance on the final day of this meeting, Saturday, May 26, and would carry a 0,000 purse. The four colts to earn purse money in the Derby — Count Turf, Royal Mustang, Ruhe and Phil D. — are ineligible for the Preakness, and this special invitation would offer them their lone opportunity to compete during this meeting. Royal Mus- tangs owner, Sam E. Wilson, Jr., of Texas, was the only one to reply immediately, and he was quite enthused and accepted the in- vitation without hesitation. Among other things being discussed in j regards to the special race is a name for . the proposed special. Since this years running is the seventy - fifth, or diamond j jubilee running of the Preakness, the name „ "Jubilee Stakes" has been suggested for . the special. In the same announcement, Maj.-Gen. Milton R. Reckord, president of Pimlico, , stated that, should as many as 18 sophomores - be named for the Diamond Jubliee i running of the Preakness, the host organization - would present the race in two divisions. - It seems, however, that not more i than a dozen colts and geldings will compete. - Should the field for the Preakness be B split, it would not establish a precedent for r the classic. It was decided in two runnings s , - i - - i - B r s in 1918, when there were 16 entrants. Ten started in the first division, which saw War Cloud the winner, with Sunny Slope second and Lanius, third. The victor earned 2,250. In the second division. Jack Hare, Jr. defeated The Porter and Kate Bright and earned 1,250. If a double running of the Preakness should develop, the first two horses in each would be pitted against the placed horses in the Derby.
