Solicitor Annexes Heelfly by Head ♦, Outgames Binky B. In Pimlico Sprint Favored Oom Paul Bothered By Swerving Horses; First Steeplechase to Genancoke By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md.. May 7.— Sylvester Richs Solicitor, who was winnerless for the season prior to reaching Maryland, scored his second consecutive victory in accounting for the Heelfly Purse this afternoon in a very roughly-run affair. Beaten a head in the featured six-furlong dash was W. Y. Goldsboroughs Binky B., who was three and one-half lengths clear of Harvey W. Shaffers Oom Paul. Formful racing early in the program came to a halt when Orb won the fourth race and Weatherman came back to take honors in the fifth event. The feature continued the parade of outsiders, for Solicitors backers in the crowd of 9,574 received 4.40 for their confidence in the Requested six-year-old. Ridden by Mike Sorrentino, Solicitor was timed in 1:12 flat. C. H. Scheids Maryland Day, launching his current campaign, held a slight lead along the backstretch, with Binky B.. Charles Crowthers Mere Bones and Emory A. Stones Rare Mineral right with him. Solicitor was next to last at this stage, while the favored Oom Paul trailed the field. Oom Paul Knocked Back Oom Paul was full of run leaving the backstretch and it appeared that apprentice Donald Mitchell was entering a spot where "Angels feared to tread" when he i drove along the inside of Solicitor. He did. however, get into position, only to be knocked back sharply when Sorrentino urged Solicitor and sent him into a narrow opening. Binky B. had managed to dispose of his early rivals when Solicitor lodged his challenge from the inside and collared the leader. Oom Paul, in the meantime, was taken up and sent around the field* Again entering the homestretch he was bothered when Maryland Day, apparently leg-weary, i swerved in front of him. Solicitor and Binky B. staged a stirring stretch duel through the final three-sixteenths of a mile and it was not until the i final stride that the result was settled, as Solicitor retained a narrow edge which had ] been attained inside the sixteenth marker The first steeplechase of the Maryland I season went to Rokeby Stables consistent l gray, Genancoke, the third winning favorite i on the program. This nine-year-old received i an excellent conditioner for the Jervis Spencer Handicap when he galloped I home 12 lengths clear of his opposition I after completing the about two miles and 15 jumps in 3:51% under Tommy Field. Montpeliers Hampton Roads was second 1 by seven lengths over R. Ambrose Clarks 1 Flying Wing. In this test. Extra Points, I Floating Isle and Flaming Comet lost their I respective riders. The riders were uninjured. .
