Bolden Banned From Ring for Life Attempts to Bribe Off icials of State Offers Examining Physician And Inspector 00 Apiece To Help Gain Reinstatement By the United Press Former middleweight boxer Nate Bolden was barred from boxing for life by the Illinois Athletic Commission yesterday after he admitted "offering some people money." The commission heard testimony by examining physician J. M. Houston and assistant chief inspector Harold Ryan that Bolden had offered them bribes of 00 each to help him gain reinstatement. He was retired indefinitely by the commission two years ago, due to a heart condition, and had applied for reinstatement. Chairman Joseph Triner said Bolden applied for reinstatement last Monday and Thursday telephoned Houston to offer him 00 "if you will pass me medically." Transcript of Conversation Made Triner said Houstons secretary was on a telephone extension and provided a transcript of their conversation. Ryan reported that Bolden had offered him a similar amount to use his "influence" in getting the reinstatement. Triner said the commission order today would bar Bolden from all activities in boxing in Illinois, including gymnasiums, | the commission offices, and dressing rooms. "I have been offering some people money," Bolden told the commission, "and I havent a dime to my name." He offered no defense for his offers. Triner said the evidence obtained would be submitted to States Attorney John Boyle for legal action under the state law against offering bribes. He said the action also would be transmitted to the National Boxing Association for possible concurrence. Bolden, 32, became a middleweight contender during the war, but lost stature rapidly after his fight with Billy Pox in Philadelphia February 11, 1946. His purse for that bout was held up pending investigation of his defeat and never was paid. ,
