Shag Tails Coasts Home Easy Winner In Role of Odds-On Choice at Detroit Shagrin Juvenile Hits Final Marker Three and One-Half Lengths Before McGrathiana By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 12. — Shag Tails, a well conformed son of Alsab and Pig Tails, carried the silks of Milton Shagrim, Cleveland sportsman, to an impressive victory here today in the third race, one of the better offerings of the day. Sent to the front at the start of the juvenile dash, Shag Tails coasted to the end of the four and one-half furlongs with a three and one-half lengths advantage while under a steady ride from jockey Arthur Monteiro. Tom B. Youngs McGrathiana, although racing rather greenly was along to take second honors and he was three-quarters of a length before I. J. Collins Charley C. at the final marker. Grace Kosiba Stables Abisok ran fourth in the field of 10 starters. Shag Tails, who was under colors but once previous to his victory today, stepped the dash distance over the fast track in :52%, which time was but two-fifths off the record. Backed down to 4 to 5 by the ► . crowd of 7,500 this cloudy afternoon, the Shagrin colt was one of the more popular winners on the program and received a nice round of applause when Monteiro galloped him back, to the scales after the speedy graduation trip. Moving into command at the outset,-Shag Tails repulsed an early bid from Saddlers Joy and then raced Abisok into defeat after reaching the stretch. Once clear, the Shagrin youngster widened his margin and he might have bettered his time had he been put under any pressure during the final furlong. McGrathiana closed strongly for a first time starter and, although he could not "seriously threaten the flying winner, he held on determinedly to beat Charley C, who gave a good ef-for to get the show. Abisok, weary after his display of early speed, wound up a tiring fourth. Best Chance, who races for the partnership of OM. and I. Prickett, drove to a length and one-half decision in the six-furlong second race under steady handling from young Gerald Champagne. Best Chance forged to the front during the drive, defeating Marion H. VanBergs Albulil, who Continued on Page Thirty-Five | Shag Tails Is Easy Winner In Role of Odds-On Choice Contoiued from Page One was second by three-quarters of a length in advance of Theodore D. Buhls. Sweep Bolt, favorite over his 10 rivals in the sprint. Sweep Bolt moved into command approaching the stretch turn, but failed to rally when set down for the final test, bowing to Best Chance, who then continued willingly enough to withstand Albums good bid. Sweep Bolt faltered during the last eighth mile and lost the place, but he was easily best of the others, taking the short end of the purse from Mrs. C. O. Schweitzers Liberty A. by four and one-half lengths. Best Chance, clocked in 1:12%, was third choice at 17 to 5 and, coupled in the Daily Double with Be Stylish, paid 58.4.0 in the special pool. Al Wellmans Be Stylish, who had the saddle services of Jimmy Stewart, proved best of the nine three-year-olds meeting in the six-furlong opener. Never far back, the locally-owned filly responded to strong handling during the stretch run and beat Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Cohens Nicotine Gal by two and one-half lengths. I. J. Collins favored Disical, who flattered his backers with a nice display of early foot; finished third, a length off the Cohen filly and a" length and one-half before Exchange Stables Third Oval, who saved fourth money in the sprint.
