1 Browns Beat Yanks, 5-1; Draw Ten Bases on Balls NEW YORK, N. Y„ June 12 UP .—The St. Louis Browns took advantage of 10 walks and- received splendid four-hit pitching from Duane Pillette today to defeat the New York Yankee, 5 to 1, in the opener of a three-game series. Pillette, a tall former Yankee, walked only two and struck out three as he scored his second victory of the season. Gerry Colemans infield hit, an infield out and Phil Rizzutos pop-fly single which left-fielder Jim Delsing just failed to catch in the sixth inning, deprived him of a shutout. Walks figured in all the Browns scoring except in the first inning when Dale Longs double drove in Bob Young, who had reached first on a force out. Fred Sanford, who may have been pitching his last game as a Yankee, did not allow a hit after the first inning until the sixth. Then two of the six walks he surrendered, singles by Sherman Lollar and Fred Marsh and Johnny Beros outfield fly produced two runs. The Browns added two more jn the seventh when Tommy Byrne forced home two runs with walks Byrne faced only six men, walked three, hit another and gave up a single to Young.
